November 2017 China's Foreign Trade in Textile and Apparel Overview

In November 2017, the trade volume of textiles and garments in China was 25.43 billion U.S. dollars, up 7.7 percent over the same period of last year. Among them, the export was 23.22 billion U.S. dollars, up 7.4 percent, the import was 2.32 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.6 percent, and the trade surplus was 20.8 billion U.S. dollars, up 7 percent.

From January to November, the trade volume of textiles and garments was 266.97 billion U.S. dollars, up 1.1% over the same period of last year. Among them, the export was 244.58 billion U.S. dollars, up by 0.6%. The import was 22.39 billion U.S. dollars, up 6%. The cumulative trade surplus was 221.29 billion U.S. dollars, up 0.1%.

November export growth in the year after only in March, driven by cumulative exports to resume growth again. The growth rate of imports has been increasing for seven consecutive months with the growth rate reaching double digits for three consecutive months.

General trade drove export processing trade down

Among the major modes of trade, the growth of general trade exports continued to expand, up 7.1% YoY in November, becoming the major force driving overall growth. Processing trade has not yet recovered its growth, down 1.4% from a year earlier. Exports of "other" trade methods rebounded in the month, up 16.8% over the same month. From January to November, the export of general trade decreased by 0.8% YoY, that of processing trade decreased by 6.1% YoY, that of small border exports increased by 18.6% YoY, while that of other forms of trade increased by 20.8%.

Yarn export volume of clothing exports have not recovered

In November, the export of textiles and clothing increased by 10.9% and 4.8% respectively. The export of yarn in textile industry showed a significant growth momentum. The export value increased for 3 consecutive months with an increase of over 10%. The month increased by 18% over the same period of the previous year and increased by 13.8% compared with the previous month. Both the export volume and unit price increased by 8.2% and 9% respectively. The fabrics and finished products increased by 12.1% and 8% respectively over the same period of the previous year. The total volume of exports of apparel and woven garments increased by 5.2% and the export unit price decreased by 1.2%.

From January to November, the total export of textiles was 100.33 billion U.S. dollars, up by 3.6% over the same period of last year. The export of apparel was 144.25 billion U.S. dollars, down 1.3% year-on-year. Exports of key yarns and fabrics of key export enterprises increased by 4.9% and 8.4% respectively over the same period of last year. The total volume of export of needle-woven garments increased by 2.9% over the same period of last year. The average export price of the major categories of commodities was still declining. Only the yarn rose by 1.3%, while the sales of fabrics and needle-woven garments dropped by 4.5% and 4.9% respectively.

Major provinces and cities in Guangdong exports were outstanding performance

In November, the export of key provinces and cities all witnessed growth. In particular, Guangdong and Fujian provinces, Guangdong achieved another growth after a continuous drop of five months. After more than a month of decline, Fujian surged 21.5% in the month.

From January to November, among the major exporting provinces and cities, Jiangsu's exports increased by 7.2% from the same period of last year. Shandong increased by 2.2% over the same period of last year. Zhejiang also recovered by 0.3%. Guangdong and Fujian still declined by 1.3% and 6.1% respectively.
